Waiting on Wednesday #1

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. I've seen this event all over the Blogoshpere in the past few weeks and I decided to jump on the bandwagon. :o)

I abolutely love Sophie Kinsella's books and I've read all of them, except for one, so it's only natural that I'm looking forward to I've Got Your Number. February seems like ages away, though!

Wishlist Wednesday #10

Wishlist Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Dani at Pen to Paper. It's another great way to find new books you can add to your TBR list. :)

This week I'm going to cheat a little bit - I found so many interesting books last week that I simply couldn't decide which one to start with: so here they are.

It's chick-lit. It's set in London. It sounds like a great story AND it's perfect for Christmas. Do I need to say more? It landed right on my wishlist. :o)

I noticed this one somewhere on Blogger and I got hooked right away. It's supposed to be a good, quick read and it's very well written, as far as I know. I've heard some great things about it and I'd love to read it myself. :-)

Blogger in Town #1 - Christmas lights

The time has finally come: the Christmas lights were switched on in town last weekend! :-) Even though I can't stand cold weather/snow/winter/you name it, I absolutely adore this time of the year. Soooo, I decided to go out and take some photos to show you how gorgeous my hometown looks at the end of November. (The best thing is, I actually live right next to the main square where these photos were taken)

Important updates - please read it :)

I'm sure most of you have already heard about the news concerning GFC. If you haven't, you can read the article here. In short, Google is planning to get rid of this whole GFC follower system next March. It applies to all non-Blogger blogs but at this point, we don't know whether they remove it from Blogger as well, or not. This is why I decided to take precautions, just in case.

What does it mean exactly?
As you can see, I added a Networked Blogs widget just below the GFC one - so if you're following me and you're reading this, please go and follow me on NetworkedBlogs too, so that you don't miss out on reviews, giveaways and such in the future. Musing Mondays #8 - Buying Books for the Holidays

Musing Mondays is a weekly event hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading. Each week MizB asks a book related question and bloggers answer with their thoughts about the given topic.

This week's question was:

Will you be buying books for the holidays, this year? If so, for whom, and why?

Yes I will! :-) I've already bought two books for two friends of mine but I'll probably buy another one for my mum as well. Friend number one is going to get Marian Keyes's The Brightest Star in the Sky because we have a very similar taste in books and I know for certain that she's not familiar with either this book or Marian herself. Friend number two, as known as Nat from Besotted with Books has already got her early Christmas present, that is, Agatha Christie's A Pocket Full of Rye. Why this one? Well, *cough* I'm trying to convert her, Bex and April to being Agatha Christie fans, haha! *cough* Just kidding. I recommended her a Christie book a couple of weeks ago and she really enjoyed it, so I thought she might enjoy this one too. :-) As for my mum, she's going to get Agatha Christie's Secret Notebooks: Fifty Years of Mysteries in the Making. She loves Christie so I'm sure she'd love it.

As for myself, I usually get book vouchers for Christmas so despite the fact that I'm completely broke, I think I'll be able to get one or two books for myself as well. We'll see. :-)

What makes things even more complicated is that the two guys actually know each other - in fact, they're enemies. As her relationship with the two boys reaches a whole new level and she gets to know them, she realizes she has to make a choice. But how is she supposed to choose one when it would mean breaking the other's heart?

Double Clutch was definitely a pleasant surprise for me. I haven't really heard anything about this book before so I didn't know what to expect - but it turned out to be a very exciting and captivating read.

It's a fast paced story, a real page turner with great character development. Although my favourite has to be Jake, I really liked Saxon's character. I didn't like him at first but there's something mysterious about him, something you can't exactly put your finger on -and it's part of why it's such an excellent story - it makes you want to find out what his secret is, what happened in his past, what he's hiding from us. There's a thin line between love and hate, and even if you don't like him in the beginning, you can't help falling for him at the end.

On the other hand, I found it a little bit hard to connect to the main character, Brenna. For me she was just too perfect: she's beautiful, she has a great relationship with her parents, she's good at sports, she's good at arts, she's an only child who has everything and she's popular (well, at least everyone seems to like her).

Another thing that didn't really work for me was the fact that I didn't feel like the main characters (but mainly Brenna) were only sixteen - it felt like they were older, more experienced in general, more mature. It might be just a cultural difference, but for me she seemed too be too level-headed to be a teenager. It may be just me, I don't know, but you'll see what I mean if you read the book. :-)

All in all, I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who likes young adult fiction or romance. There's a great twist near the end which makes it impossible to foretell what's going to happen next, I absolutely loved it. The author keeps you in suspense until the very end and even though there are hints about what Saxon's "secret" might be, I was completely taken by surprise. The sequel was published last month so I'm looking forward to finding out how the story continues! Make sure to pick up a copy and read it, I can guarantee that you'll like it.

So why write a book on teen pregnancy? Simply put, the teens of today needed it, and the moms needed the right opening for them to discuss it. Mocked by Destiny provides that. Putting the real life problems into a fictional formatted character allowed me to reach the teens. I’ve had mothers thank me for giving them the right story to approach the subject with their daughters. 

I know how and why it happens since I’d been there with my family on the base and flooded the boardwalk after everything shut down. Since I also had family who lived there I knew what happened after we left. I was asked a question to answer today so here it is: 

When creating your characters, what traits did you pull from yourself, or those in your life, and give to them?

As for Stella running away when things became too much for her to handle came from a teen I know. She lost her mother, which was one of my closest friends. Mikayla ran several times hoping to out run her pain. As for Stefan, his loyalty and devotion that came from my husband. That’s how he would have handled the situation.

Daisy’s reaction to the unexpected pregnancy came from my grandmother’s reaction to my own aunt’s teen pregnancy. Like with Stella, Nana, wouldn’t talk to my aunt until she had reached her delivery. In the question what trait came from me? The fact of not knowing my biological father and the abandonment that comes with it. I could understand how it felt to be her. 

My fans like to tell me I torture my characters and I do. I put them through a roller-coaster ride. So if you like books that draw you in and hold you there, my fans recommend this for you!

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Do you know I always find this question the hardest...... Well my name is Jenny and I’m in my early thirties. I’m married and “mummy” to a gorgeous Chunky Chocolate Labrador. I’m an avid reader and I live in rural England. You can normally find me with my head stuck in a book somewhere.

2. When did you start blogging and why have you decided to start a blog?

I first started blogging back in June; I really wanted to have a go as I saw some of the most awesome blogs. I love books and I love talking about books. Originally I was going to blog about books and also life with my Chocolate Labrador – Hades – but the book side of it seems to have taken over.

3. How did you come up with your blog's name?

My blog name, Chocolate Chunky Munkie, is the nickname of my dog Hades. Hades is a chunky chocolate Labrador and at times he can be a right cheeky monkey. So this is where I got the inspiration for my blog name.

Booking Through Thursday #8 - Thankful

This week's question:

What book or author are you most thankful to have discovered? Have you read everything they’ve written? Reread them? Why do you appreciate them so much?

I could list many books and many authors here but the ones who influenced me the most are:

1. J.K.Rowling and the Harry Potter series: I've read every single book in the series and re-read some of them. It was part of my childhood and I'm still gutted that it's over, I didn't want it to end! It made my childhood as fun it was and as cheesy as it might sound, I'm sure it wouldn't have been the same without Harry Potter. 
2. Meg Cabot: Although I haven't read all of her books, she was the one (apart from Rowling) who got me into reading when I was younger. I absolutely loved the whole Princess' Diaries series and just like Harry Potter, it was part of my teenage years. The Heather Wells series has been my favourite series so far, can't wait for the 4th book to come out!
3. Agatha Christie: As most people already know (*wink*), I've been a huge Agatha Christie fan for many years now. She was the one who got me into reading in English - as you know, it's not my first language so I read most of Rowling's and Cabot's books in Hungarian. Christie was the one who inspired me to pick up a book which has been written in English and read it. And I haven't read a single book in Hungarian ever since.
4. Sophie Kinsella: She's the one whose books never fail to make me laugh. I've read all of her books, except Twenties Girl but she always managed to crack me up. 
5. Marian Keyes: It doesn't matter what she writes or how long it is, it's guaranteed that I will enjoy it. Once again, it might sound very cheesy but she's such an inspiration. She's been through many -let's just say- unpleasant things in her life but she still managed to go on and stay optimistic.
   
   "Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional. That's what I want people to take from this book [The Brightest Star in the Sky]. Optimism can be relearnt."

Double Clutch blog tour - guest post from Liz Reinhardt

My First Online Boyfriend, But, More Importantly, The Only Guy I Dated Who I Had Zero Chemistry With

I recently wrote a YA contemporary romance about a girl named Brenna who really, really likes two amazing, great, fun, sweet, sexy guys. While I've known a few guys who fit all of those criteria, there were only a handful I ever really clicked with on a deeper level. Once I made the huge mistake of dating a guy I really had no interest in. I dated him for almost two months! How did it happen? Let me tell you!

When I was in my second year of college, my long-term boyfriend and I broke up. Our relationship had been on the downward spiral for a few years, but the end was messy. It culminated in my finding out that he'd set up an online dating profile and had gone on a date with a girl while we were still together. The only logical reaction was to let him see me with lots of gorgeous, smart, awesome guys who didn't cheat!

But, there was one tiny snag. I was a women's studies/art history double major. There were very, very few men in either major, and those who did choose those areas of study tended to have zero romantic interest in me (or any woman, for that matter). How was I going to get a guy? And quickly?

I decided that if my ex could get a date online, so could I!

I absolutely knew I'd meet my soulmate online!

This was back when scanners were really expensive, and scanning was pretty much the only way you could get a picture online. Cell phones still had antennas and cameras used film. It was the dark ages! You had to rely on your words and your wit to get a guy to fall for you. I mulled over my ad.

I'm a healthy, tall college sophomore from Sussex County, NJ, but don't let that scare you! I have all my teeth, I promise. I love travelling, eating way too much greasy food at all-night diners, and the first two Godfather movies. Maybe you can convince me to take a chance on the third?

 My WW post looks a bit ... red this week, haha! Anyway, I think the cover says it all. You know how much of a 'cover lover' I am so I only had to take one swift glance at this cover and it landed right on my wishlist. We all need a nice chick-lit from time to time, just to take our mind off everything else and I've heard some REALLY good things about this one. Plus, I'm a huge Sophie Kinsella fan so if they compare Dickinson's books to Kinsella's then it's a definite win. I hope I'll be able to read it some time. :)

Musing Mondays #7 - Recommendations

Musing Mondays is a weekly event hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading. Each week MizB asks a book related question and bloggers answer with their thoughts about the given topic.

This week's question:

How do you decide to read a book by an author you haven’t read before? What sort of recommendations count most highly in making that decision?

Oh, that's a good one. A lot of times I go by recommendations from the authors I love the most. For example, after I read The Brightest Star in the Sky, I read a few interviews with Marian Keyes where she told the readers which authors she likes the most, who inspired her, that sort of thing. And naturally, I checked them out. My second source for recommendations is Goodreads. I love the fact that they recommend you books based on what you added to your shelf and they're divided into categories based on genre. I usually flick through these recommendations once in a while. Having said that, the deciding factor for me is the genre and the blurb. It doesn't matter how many people say it's a brilliant book if it belongs to a genre I don't like = I won't read it, even if it's a great book. If I happen to be in a bookshop and there's no one there with me to recommend a good read then I'll decide based on the blurb. :-)

was over the moon when author Emlyn Chand contacted me and asked me whether I would like to take part in the Farsighted blog tour and be one of the lucky few who got to read her book before the release date. YA fiction is very close to my heart and even though I haven’t read much paranormal fiction before, I was more than ready to give it a shot. Thank goodness for that, because this book is simply unputdownable.

lex Kosmitoras seems like your average 16 year-old high school student who is bullied by the “cool guys”, who sits by himself in the school cafeteria and is hopeless when it comes to making friends or interacting with girls. Alex, however, is different. He has been blind ever since he can remember. And if it wasn’t enough, it turns out that he’s gifted – that is, he can see the future. As much as he would like to ignore this, he can’t. Especially when Simmi, a new girl from India moves into town and becomes Alex’s best (and only) friend – but the boy’s visions begin to suggest that Simmi is about to die. What can he do in order to save her? Can he put an end to these visions, change the future and save Simmi’s life?
